
Dr. Larry A. Litscher, a native of Pittsfield Massachusetts, graduated Summa Cum Laude from Dartmouth College, where he was Phi Beta Kappa and participated on the varsity cross-country and ski teams. Dr. Litscher is a board-certified eye physician and surgeon who is also fellowship trained as a sub-specialist in corneal diseases and surgery. His practice encompasses comprehensive care, including cataract, glaucoma, infectious disease, contact lenses, and diabetes, as well as his specialty interest in advanced cataract/lens implant surgery, corneal transplant surgery, and laser vision correction.
Dr. Litscher earned his medical degree from McGill University in Montreal, Canada, being sited as a "University Scholar". He completed his ophthalmology residency at Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, NY, and then pursued a year's Fellowship in corneal diseases and surgery at the University of Florida. While in Florida, Dr. Litscher participated in some of the earliest corneal refractive procedures to be done in this country.
Dr. Litscher has been in private practice in several locations over nearly 25 years. After practicing for several years in North Carolina and Pennsylvania, he began his practice in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1987 as the area's first corneal specialist. As such, Dr. Litscher is an expert on treating infections, ulcers, and injuries of the cornea. He is one of the few eye surgeons in western Massachusetts to perform corneal transplant surgery. He was the first eye surgeon in western Massachusetts to perform corneal refractive surgery in 1990, and the first in Springfield to perform laser vision correction. He was featured on a local television news cast in 1991 to introduce the technique of no-stitch cataract surgery to the media. He is the first Springfield surgeon to be certified in the new technology Crystalens® implant. He is a VISX™ and Allegretto Wave™ certified LASIK surgeon. During the course of his practice, Dr. Litscher earned an MBA from the University of Massachusetts and was named to the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society.
Dr. Litscher continues to be an avid skier and runner since competing on high school and college teams. As a top-ranked senior New England distance runner, he competes with his local running club in regional and national races. His senior team has several New England cross-country titles as well as a national masters cross-country championship to their credit.
